Abstract

One of the aspects of how Academician A.P. Okladnikov perceived rock art as a historical source was integration of the objects of rock art into “provinces”. Although there is no special work of A.P. Okladnikov on this subject, the present article discusses methodological aspects of his studies and his concept of rock art of the Stone Age - the Paleolithic and Neolithic. A.P. Okladnikov identified two regions for the Paleolithic, and associated the process of the emergence of rock art “provinces” with the Neolithic; three of such “provinces” are taiga province, Far Eastern/Amur province, and steppe/Central Asian province. A.P. Oklanikov has not completed his research on the subject, and the problems of the conceptual framework, clear inner differentiation, etc. have remained unresolved. However, he succeeded in defining the main paradigm for further research.
