Abstract

The article presents the results of a Russian-Chinese survey of some archaeological sites on both banks of the Amur River in the Amur Region of Russia and the Heihe District of China, or in the Western Amur region. Seven archaeological sites have been examined on the Chinese side, and fifteen sites from the Paleolithic to the Late Middle Ages and the Modern period have been examined on the Russian side. It has been established that almost all types of Neolithic, Early Iron Age, and Medieval sites can be found on both banks of the Amur River, but the fortified settlements of the Daurian type on the right bank of the Amur are not yet known to the Chinese archaeologists. It was sugested that fortified settlements of the Jurchen (or Jin) period were concentrated on a limited area of the Amur between Konstantinovka, Xunke, and Poyarkovo as a defensive system with the possible remote transmission of visual information.
